New Writing Development Fund

New Writing Development Fund

In September 2023, supported by Sir Ian McKellen and Roger Allam opening Frank & Percy, The Other Palace introduced the new writing development fund. 50p from each ticket sold for Main House productions will be allocated to the fund, specifically designed to support the development of new writing, playwrights, composers & lyricists through initiatives and programmes at The Other Palace.

THE FUND SUPPORTS

A unique annual festival that provides a platform to showcase and celebrate new musical theatre. Writing teams from all backgrounds and from across the UK and internationally are encouraged to apply.

Since its inception in 2019, the festival has presented 1-hour selections of 35 musicals, many of which have then gone on to further development and full production at The Other Palace, The Turbine Theatre, Edinburgh Fringe Festival and beyond.

In partnership with Mercury Musical Developments, this lunchtime series of new musical readings provides writers with an opportunity to share a 45-minute excerpt of their piece to supportive audiences. Submissions are open to new British musicals that have not received a professional production. Ticket sales are retained by the writers to support the development of their piece.

Between 2023-2024, 22 new British musicals were selected to present at Musical Bites, many as their first public presentation.

The Other Palace’s podcast features music and exclusive interviews with the writers and creatives of new musicals. Submissions are open to musicals at all stages of creation, aiming for development and/or premiere in the UK.

Since June 2023, the podcast has featured episodes with 29 new musical writing teams including Fangirls, Redcliffe, Becoming Nancy, Babies and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The podcast has been listened to tens of thousands of times all around the world!

Studio Development Workshops

The fund has also enabled The Other Palace to offer resources and support to a number of new musicals and emerging artists, including development workshops and readings both private and public.

There will be at least one public opportunity each year to apply for the development workshop programme. Further details to be announced!
