#TOPTalks with Daniel Boys

We spoke with Daniel Boys ( whose credits include Avenue Q, Peter Pan, Spamalot, The Pirate Queen, Rent and Sunset Boulevard), currently playing Marvin, between shows about how he got into musical theatre and his experiences performing in Falsettos.
You currently star as Marvin in Falsettos. What has been the biggest challenge about taking on this role?
Daniel: I think musically this has been the hardest job of my career. William Finn has written an extraordinary score, but my god it’s tricky to learn!
I do think Marvin is a gift of a part. I get to go through and show a whole range of emotions. It’s certainly a challenge, but what actor wouldn’t relish that!
From @_liz91_: What is your favourite line in Falsettos?
Daniel: Certainly the most heart breaking line for me is ‘We’re just gonna skip that stage’ in the song What Would I Do.
I also love ‘Look look look look look, it’s a lesbian from next door!’
How did you get into Musical Theatre? Did you always know you wanted to be an actor?
Daniel: It was Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express. I was taken by my parents as a child and I can vividly remember being absolutely enthralled by it. I knew then I wanted to be on stage and sing.
What advice would you give to aspiring performers at the start of their careers?
Daniel: Be prepared to be out of work a lot of the time and don’t take rejection to heart. Find another job that you also love that you can do alongside being an actor. It’s a tough old profession!
